7 Ways to Beat Litterbox Odors

There are many things to love about our feline friends. Fluffy is cute, cuddly, fun to watch, and full of adorable quirks. She’s also very clean. Kitties groom themselves daily, and use their own purrsonal powder rooms to do their business. However, your pet’s litterbox won’t do much for your décor, and it can get, well, a bit stinky. Cleaning

The best way to beat litterbox smells is also the simplest: keep it clean. We recommend scooping it out daily, and changing the litter weekly.

Plants

Plants are a great addition to any décor. They also help filter air, which is very useful in keeping your home smelling nice. Consider upcycling an end table into a litterbox holder. Choose one with doors, and just cut a hole in one side for Fluffy. Then, put an attractive plant on top. Be sure to choose nontoxic ones. You’ll find a full list online at the ASPCA website.

Deodorizers

There are now many products that can help combat stinky litterbox smells. Liners, powders, and sprays can all help. Try different ones, and see what works best for you and Fluffy.

Air Fresheners

Putting an air freshener near Fluffy’s powder room certainly won’t hurt anything. Just opt for products that break down scent molecules, rather than just mask them with perfumes. This is a great spot for a timed-release product, or even some stick-on ones.

Ventilation

Keep the litterbox in a spot with adequate ventilation. If you keep your kitty’s box in a spare bathroom, keep the fan running in that room.

Avoid Overcrowding

Do you have more than one kitty? If so, your pets will need separate bathrooms. We generally recommend getting one box per kitty, plus at least one extra. Be sure to put them in different areas: otherwise Fluffy and Mittens may think of them as one big box.

Diet

While it probably goes without saying that your kitty’s powder room will never smell like roses, extreme foul odors can be a sign of medical issues and/or poor nutrition. Make sure your furball is eating a premium, high-quality food! Ask your vet for more information.
